United MileagePlus Premier Silver is the entry rung of the Premier ladder and the first level where United treats you as a recognised customer at the airport and on board. At 5,000 Premier Qualifying Points and 15 Premier Qualifying Flights, or 6,000 PQP alone, in a calendar year, Silver is the lowest gate in United's PQP-and-PQF framework for elite qualification.

Chasing this status across other programmes too? Most frequent flyers hold status with more than one airline or hotel. See our guide to tracking and keeping elite status across every programme, then let Miles Mosaic forecast whether your booked trips will requalify you, with no loyalty password required.

The reading on Silver in 2026 is that it is a starter tier, useful for travellers who fly United occasionally and want a baseline of recognition, limited as a destination in its own right. Star Alliance Silver adds priority waitlisting and airport standby on partner airlines but does not unlock lounge access. This guide covers what Silver delivers per the United Premier page, the realities of the dual PQP-PQF qualification, and the path to the line.

What Premier Silver on United MileagePlus gives you

Premier Silver earns 5 MileagePlus miles per US dollar on tickets United issues from April 2, 2026, or 8 for primary cardholders of an eligible United card, against 3 and 6 for general members. The earning bonus is meaningful across a year of moderate United flying but does not transform the earning maths in the way that the higher tiers do.

The headline operational benefit at Silver is Star Alliance Silver status. Star Alliance lists just two Silver benefits across its member airlines, priority reservations waitlisting and priority airport standby. Star Silver does not unlock lounge access, extra baggage or priority boarding on partners; those are Star Gold territory, which on the United ladder starts at Premier Gold.

United-specific Silver benefits, listed on the Premier benefits page, include one free checked bag in Economy on United-operated flights, free Economy Plus seating assigned at check-in (preferred seats are free at booking), priority check-in and security screening, and priority boarding via Group 2. Silver also gets expanded access to Saver awards, the Premier Priority Desk phone line, and free same-day flight changes within the same fare class; the free drink and snack in Economy is a Premier 1K benefit, not a Silver one.

Silver does get complimentary upgrades on eligible United-operated flights, but its window opens only on the day of departure, after Premier 1K (96 hours before), Platinum (72 hours) and Gold (48 hours). A Silver booking a paid Economy ticket on a competitive United route generally stays in Economy or Economy Plus, because the front-of-cabin seats are usually gone by then on routes with structured demand. The Silver benefit set is best understood as an introduction to the Premier framework rather than a destination tier.

What Star Alliance Silver actually covers at partner airports

Star Alliance Silver recognition is thin by design, and the floor is more uniform than the ceiling. Premier Silvers flying Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, EVA Air, or Air Canada can count on the two benefits Star Alliance guarantees at Silver level, priority on reservation waitlists and priority airport standby; anything more, such as the priority check-in on Air Canada that United's benefits page lists for Premier Silver, is an individual airline's extra rather than an alliance rule. Star Silver does not include lounge access at any partner, does not include extra baggage allowance on a partner-operated flight (United's free-bag policy applies only to United-operated flights), and does not include priority boarding or any guaranteed reservation benefit. The asymmetry is sharpest on the partners that offer the richest Star Gold benefits: Singapore Airlines, ANA, and Swiss all run premium lounges that Premier Gold can use on partner itineraries, while Premier Silver cannot.

Bag allowance, seat selection, and the unglamorous mechanics

The single free checked bag at Premier Silver applies on United-operated flights, and United's checked-bag rules let Premier members' bags weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) rather than the 50 pounds allowed in Economy, within the standard 62-inch linear-dimension cap. A second checked bag remains payable. Economy Plus seating, which adds roughly three to six inches of legroom in the United Economy cabin, is complimentary at check-in for Silvers and for one companion on the same reservation, while preferred seats are free at booking; most non-elite passengers either purchase Economy Plus or take what is left. Group 2 boarding gets Silvers onto the aircraft after first-class, business-class, Polaris business, Premier 1K, Premier Platinum, Premier Gold, and Star Alliance Gold passengers but ahead of the main Economy boarding zones, which usually means a fighting chance at overhead bin space on full domestic flights.

How to qualify for Premier Silver

Premier Silver requires 5,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and 15 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) in a calendar year. PQPs are earned through United-marketed flights, eligible MileagePlus co-brand card spend, and partner flying on eligible Star Alliance fare classes. PQFs are flight-segment counters that require actual segments flown rather than card spend.

The dual-metric structure is the operational detail that catches first-time Silver candidates. A traveller can build 5,000 PQP through co-brand card spend but cannot clear 15 PQF without actual flying, because flight counts come only from travel on United, United Express or eligible Star Alliance partner flights, and Basic Economy tickets earn no PQF. United also offers a PQP-only path that waives the PQF requirement at 6,000 PQP, and both paths require at least four flights on United or United Express.

The PQF path is the easier dimension for most travellers, 15 flights a year is one round-trip a month for seven or eight months, or any mix of one-way flights that reach 15. The PQP path is where pure card-spend strategies hit the wall: clearing 5,000 PQP from card spend takes US$75,000 on the United Club Infinite card at 1 PQP per US$15, or US$100,000 on the Quest card at 1 PQP per US$20, while the Explorer card stops at 1,000 PQP a year.

The qualification year runs the calendar year. Silver status is valid from the day you qualify to the end of the next program year, so Silver reached in 2026 lasts until January 31, 2028. PQPs and PQFs reset to zero on 1 January, with the standard year-end timing risk for flights flown in late December that may post in early January per the documented earning rules.

The PQP-only path at 6,000 points

The Silver qualification framework added a parallel PQP-only path that drops the segment requirement entirely in exchange for a higher spend gate, 6,000 PQP versus 5,000 PQP plus 15 PQF. The PQP-only route is the structurally interesting addition for card-heavy profiles. Per United's qualification page, the United Club Infinite Card earns 1 PQP per US$15 up to a yearly cap of 28,000 PQP, so a heavy spender on that card (annual fee $695 as of early 2026) clears the PQP-only Silver threshold with US$90,000 of spend. The United Quest Card earns 1 PQP per US$20 up to 18,000 PQP (US$120,000 for the same result), while the United Explorer caps out at 1,000 PQP, so the Club Infinite is the realistic card-led route. Card spend still cannot skip the airport entirely: every Premier level requires at least four flights on United or United Express. For Silvers who fly partners or codeshares heavily and only occasionally sit on a United aircraft, the PQP-only path is the practical answer.

How Premier Silver compares to the tiers around it

Below Silver sits general MileagePlus membership, which earns 3 miles per US dollar on United-issued tickets (6 with an eligible United card), no Star Alliance status, and no priority handling at the airport. The Member-to-Silver gap is the entry to the Premier framework and the first free checked bag on United-operated flights.

Above Silver, Premier Gold at 10,000 PQP and 30 PQF is the qualification jump that unlocks the structurally meaningful Premier benefits. Gold moves complimentary upgrades forward to 48 hours before departure, adds Star Alliance Gold status (which includes lounge access at Star partner airports), and earns 6 miles per dollar, or 9 for cardmembers. The 5,000-PQP gap from Silver to Gold is the most leveraged jump in the Premier ladder, the operational benefit uplift is dramatically larger than the qualification gap suggests.

For travellers averaging 5,000 to 8,000 PQP a year, Silver is the rational ceiling. The benefits are limited but the qualification cost is contained. For travellers projecting 10,000+ PQP naturally on the back of regular United flying, Gold's lounge access and earlier upgrade window make the additional 5,000-PQP push almost always worth the marginal effort. The structural difference between Silver and Gold benefits is larger than between most adjacent tier pairs.

How Premier Silver stacks up against AAdvantage and SkyMiles entry tiers

The three US legacy entry tiers, Premier Silver, AAdvantage Gold, and Silver Medallion, sit at broadly similar positions in the elite-status hierarchy but split on three measurable points. Bag policy: United and American include a free first checked bag for the elite; Delta does not, which means a Silver Medallion still pays $35 for a first bag on a domestic Delta ticket. Upgrades: all three entry tiers get complimentary upgrades, with different limits. AAdvantage Gold gets them on flights under 500 miles, United Premier Silver on eligible United flights but only from the day of departure, after every higher Premier tier, and Delta Silver Medallion on domestic routes at the bottom of the Medallion stack, so the clearance rate on competitive routes is materially lower than the rate Premier Gold achieves on United. Earning bonus: AAdvantage Gold earns 7 base miles per US dollar (with 40% bonus over base 5); Delta Silver Medallion earns 7 SkyMiles per US dollar on the same base structure; United Silver earns 5 miles per dollar on tickets United issues from April 2, 2026, or 8 with an eligible United card. The qualification effort splits sharply. AAdvantage Gold requires 40,000 Loyalty Points and is friendly to non-flight earning through co-brand spend, dining, shopping portals, and Bask Bank deposits. United Silver via the standard path requires 15 flights, and even its 6,000-PQP path needs four on United or United Express. For an occasional flyer who lives in a US legacy's hub city without dominating one carrier, AAdvantage Gold is generally the most achievable entry tier in 2026; Premier Silver is the more flight-dependent of the three.

How to actually hit Premier Silver

The Silver path blends two earning streams: United-operated flying (the primary PQP and PQF source) and MileagePlus co-brand card spend that contributes PQPs at eligible spend thresholds. United cards earn PQP on every purchase rather than at spend thresholds: 1 PQP per US$15 on the United Club Infinite card and 1 PQP per US$20 on the Quest and Explorer, up to annual caps of 28,000, 18,000 and 1,000 PQP.

A worked example clarifies the maths. Take a Denver-based regional sales rep whose work travel includes one round-trip a month to United-served destinations, typical paid Economy fares around US$350 per round-trip, totalling US$4,200 across twelve trips. United flights earn 1 PQP per US dollar of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, not taxes, so those flights generate roughly 3,700 PQP whatever the fare class. Add US$25,000 of United Club Infinite spend, worth about 1,650 PQP at 1 PQP per US$15, and the combined total of about 5,350 PQP clears Silver's 5,000, with the 24 flights also clearing the 15-PQF requirement.

The Star Alliance partner flying contribution depends on the airline and the fare class. When the partner rather than United issues the ticket, United's partner airline page pays 1 PQP for every 5 award miles on preferred partners such as Lufthansa and ANA, capped at 1,500 PQP per Business Class flight, and 1 PQP for every 6 award miles on MileagePlus partners such as Singapore Airlines, capped at 1,000. A nonstop long-haul Business round-trip can therefore add up to 3,000 PQP on Lufthansa or ANA and up to 2,000 on Singapore Airlines, plus 2 PQFs. Discount Economy fares still earn PQP, just fewer, because award miles are a percentage of the distance flown: United's Lufthansa chart runs from 25% in class K to 200% in Business classes J, C and D, and only classes I, O, R and X earn nothing.

Status matches and challenges into United Premier Silver are rarely offered as a starter benefit. United's informal channels, accessible through MileagePlus member service, generally focus on matching established mid-tier rivals into Premier Platinum challenges rather than offering Silver as a direct match. For travellers already holding Delta Gold Medallion or American AAdvantage Platinum, the typical path is a Platinum challenge rather than a Silver direct match.

What the 2026 PlusPoints rule change means for Silvers

The most-discussed 2026 MileagePlus change is the extension of PlusPoints upgrade currency and Complimentary Premier Upgrades to award tickets, effective February 1, 2026. The headline matters less for Silvers than for Gold, Platinum, and 1K members because Silver does not receive a PlusPoints allotment at all, that benefit starts at Premier Platinum at 40 PlusPoints. The Silver-relevant change in the same package is that the August 21, 2025 elimination of the Excursionist Perk closed a popular routing technique for stretching MileagePlus mile redemptions on Silver-eligible award bookings, which means a Silver who relied on the perk to add a free intra-Europe or intra-Asia leg to a transatlantic award now pays full mileage for that leg. The 2026 framework also confirms that PlusPoints upgrades shift to dynamic pricing in February 2027, a downstream change that does not affect Silvers directly but tightens the case for pushing through to Platinum in qualification years where the additional spend is realistic.

Worked Silver qualification example: the Chicago consultant

Consider a Chicago-based consultant who flies fifteen United round-trips a year between O'Hare and east-coast or west-coast client offices, averaging $400 round-trip on paid Economy fares, of which about $350 is base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges. Thirty PQF a year clears the flight requirement twice over. United flights earn 1 PQP per US dollar of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, so those tickets generate about 5,250 PQP across the year. A modest layer of United Quest Card spend (US$25,000 over the year) adds another 1,250 PQP at 1 PQP per US$20, pushing the combined total to about 6,500 PQP. The consultant qualifies for Silver through the standard 5,000-plus-15-PQF path on the flights alone, with the card spend providing insurance against a cancelled trip or a slow December. Because PQP follows the price paid, not the fare class, a few pricier last-minute tickets or a couple of extra trips lift the same flying pattern toward 8,000 PQP, which is the realistic on-ramp to a Gold push in the following year, where the 30 flights already meet Gold's PQF requirement.

What changed in 2026 and what trips people up

Three Silver surprises catch returning MileagePlus members. The first is the PQF requirement on the standard path. PQFs come only from actual segments flown on United-marketed flights or eligible Star Alliance partner flights. A traveller who builds 5,000 PQPs entirely through co-brand card spend but flies only 10 segments during the year does not qualify via the standard 5,000-plus-15-PQF route, the segment counter must reach 15. The PQP-only path at 6,000 PQP is the alternative that waives the PQF requirement entirely, but the gap between 5,000 and 6,000 PQP is the real cost of skipping the segments, and the higher PQP gate is genuinely harder to clear without flying.

The second is the Star Alliance Silver lounge question. Star Silver does not include lounge access at Star Alliance partner airports, that benefit starts at Star Gold, which on the United ladder begins at Premier Gold. A Silver who flies a partner international itinerary expecting lounge access at intermediate hubs will be turned away unless their fare class includes lounge access independently. The benefit framework is documented on Star Alliance's benefits and privileges page, which gives Silver members priority waitlisting and airport standby only.

The third is the United Club lounge question. United Club access in the US is a cardholder benefit (United Club Infinite) or a separate paid membership rather than a Premier tier benefit. Premier Silver does not include United Club access; even Premier Gold does not. The lounge benefit at United domestic airports is fundamentally a cardholder construct, not a status-tier construct.

The bottom line on Premier Silver

Premier Silver is the United MileagePlus entry tier, useful as the foundation for next year's push to Gold, limited as a destination in its own right. The 5,000-PQP and 15-PQF gate, or 6,000 PQP on its own, is achievable for moderate United flyers, and the Star Alliance Silver recognition adds priority waitlisting and standby on partner airlines without the lounge access of Star Gold. For travellers planning a meaningful United relationship, Gold's combination of lounge access, an earlier upgrade window, and a second free bag justifies the additional qualification almost always. Frequently asked questions

How long does United Premier Silver status last after qualification?
United says Premier status is valid from the day you qualify to the end of the next program year, so Premier Silver reached at any point in 2026 does not expire until January 31, 2028. PQPs and PQFs reset to zero on 1 January, but the resulting Silver status remains active through that date regardless of when in the qualifying year you crossed the threshold.
Do I need both PQPs and PQFs to qualify for Premier Silver?
Not necessarily. The standard path is 5,000 PQPs and 15 PQFs in the same calendar year, and a traveller meeting one of those thresholds but not the other does not qualify that way. United also offers a PQP-only path at every level, including Silver: 6,000 PQP with no PQF requirement. Both paths still require at least four flights on United or United Express during the year.
Can United co-brand cards alone get me to Premier Silver?
Almost, via the PQP-only path at 6,000 PQP. United cards earn PQP on every purchase: the United Club Infinite Card earns 1 PQP per US$15 of spend up to 28,000 PQP a year, so US$90,000 of spend reaches 6,000 PQP, and the United Quest Card earns 1 PQP per US$20 up to 18,000 PQP, so US$120,000 does the same. Card spend cannot replace the flying entirely, though: every Premier level requires at least four flights on United or United Express. The standard 5,000-plus-15-PQF path remains for traditional flyers.
Does Premier Silver include United Club access?
No. United Club lounge access in the US requires either the Chase United Club Infinite cardholder benefit, a separate paid United Club membership, or eligible same-day Star Alliance international travel with Star Gold or above status. Premier Silver opens Star Alliance partner lounges only when paired with Star Gold status, which begins at Premier Gold, not Silver. The lounge benefit at Silver is essentially limited to the cardholder path.
